Dear. Mr. President,

The Austrian Academy of Sciences strongly supports your endeavor to urge the Government and the Legislative Authorities of the Republic of Moldova to reconsider and cancel the drastic financial cuts planned by their Budget Law 2013 for the expenditure on science and innovation.

Drastic financial reductions will cause an enormous loss of Moldavia’s institutional and intellectual resources in the field of research and innovation. This will in turn imply a lasting and irreversible detriment to the scientific development and the economic progress of your country.

It is particularly during periods of crisis and unrest that the promotion of sciences and research will lead to cultural progress and a successful socio-economic development. In the course of the friendly relationships between the Moldovan and the Austrian Academies of Sciences we have gained the conviction that in Moldova there is a great intellectual and scientific potential which has already made a great contribution to the country’s progress. It would be a tragic loss if it could not be further developed.

Prof. Dr. Helmut Denk,
President

Prof. Dr. Arnold Suppan,
Vice President

Prof. Dr. Sigrid Jalkotzy-Deger
President of the Division of Humanities and the Social Sciences
